Another Israeli Soldier Commits Suicide, Rising Military Deaths

(MENAFN) Another Israeli soldier tragically died on Sunday, succumbing to a self-inflicted gunshot wound in a grim addition to the rising number of military deaths linked to the ongoing conflict in Gaza. The army confirmed the fatality.

A military communique identified the deceased as Dan Phillipson, a combat soldier in training who hailed from Norway. He reportedly attempted suicide by gunfire on Tuesday at a training facility in southern Israel. The army verified that the soldier succumbed to his critical injuries in the hospital where he had been transported following the incident.

Israeli media reports indicate a disturbing trend, with four soldiers having taken their own lives within the past two weeks alone, and a total of 19 since the start of the year. Data from media in May revealed an even starker reality: a staggering 42 soldiers have committed suicide since Israel's "genocidal war" in the Gaza Strip commenced in October 2023.

Since October 2023, Israel's military operations in the Gaza Strip have resulted in the deaths of nearly 59,000 Palestinians, predominantly women and children. This extensive military campaign has devastated the enclave, caused the collapse of its healthcare infrastructure, and triggered severe food shortages.

Adding to the international scrutiny, the International Criminal Court issued arrest warrants last November for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant, citing war crimes and crimes against humanity committed in Gaza. Furthermore, Israel is currently facing a genocide case at the International Court of Justice concerning its military actions in the enclave.
